State tax filing

California follows the Federal Itemized deductions to a point, but does not allow you to deduct state taxes on the California return.  There are some variances, as this website shows:  https://www.ftb.ca.gov/current/Income-tax-reform.shtml, but in general you claim the same deductions on the Federal return (charitable deductions, etc.) as what you would on the Federal return (and you may itemize in CA even if you take the standard deduction on the Federal return).
