State tax filing
1. Yes, you would be a part-year resident of California and Kentucky. You will pay tax for the income you earned in each state.
2. No, you would not pay the tax rate of a full year resident. Part-year California returns are prepared as if you were a full year resident to determine the tax rate. The tax rate is then applied only to the California source income. See Taxation of Nonresidents and Individuals who Change Residency (FTB Publication 1100) for more information.
3. Yes, your wages for 2022 will be taxable in Kentucky- in general, resident pay tax on all income regardless of where it was earned. However, if you pay tax to California, you will get a credit for the tax paid on your Kentucky return so you will not be double taxed on the same income.
