State tax filing
Yes. If you are an Ohio resident, work in Indiana, AND have Indiana taxes withheld from your pay, then you would file a resident Ohio return and an Indiana nonresident return to get a refund of taxes paid to that Indiana, which were held erroneously.
Ohio and Indiana have a reciprocal agreement. Generally, this means that all salaries, wages, tips, and commissions earned in Indiana by an Ohio resident must be reported as if they were earned in Ohio. However, if taxes have been withheld or paid to Indiana, then a nonresident return would have to be filed for a refund of state tax.
You will need to amend your return and include the nonresident state of Indiana. This will cause a tax due for Ohio and a refund in Indiana. Please follow the directions on the How do I amend my 2020 return?
After you initiate the amendment, you have to make sure you've filled out the Personal Info section correctly. Please follow the steps below:
- With your return open, select My Info in the left-hand menu.
- Then, on the Personal info summary screen, scroll down to Other State Income, and select Edit.
- At the Did you make money in any other states? question, answer Yes and make sure your nonresident state(s) are selected from the drop-down.
- Select Continue to return to your Personal info summary.
- Click on State on the left hand side.
- Add the state of Indiana as a non-resident.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
