State tax filing
The Senior Citizen’s Tax Credit is available to those homeowners who:
- Participate in the Homestead Exemption program (contact your county assessor’s office for more information),
- Have paid their property tax, and
- Have income that is less than 150% of federal poverty guidelines (based on the number of people in the household). See chart here.
If you believe you are eligible for any credit, you must file a West Virginia state income tax return, including the Schedule SCTC‐1.
In January senior citizens who receive the homestead exemption will receive a packet of information about claiming the refund along with form SCTC-1. When you get to your state return in TurboTax, you will come to a question that asks ''Did you receive a letter from the state tax department?'' Answer YES.
The amount of allowable credit is already determined and is found in Box 2 of form SCTC-1 which is part of the information packet.
