State tax filing
Your Michigan Home Heating credit would have been on Form MI-1040CR-7. This Form is supported in TurboTax for e-filing and print. If you do not see a Form MI-1040CR-7 in your state return documents, then you can mail the form separately.
Although the State of Michigan suggests it be e-filed with your Michigan tax return, you should not amend your 2020 return because this credit does not flow to your MI-1040. State law requires the Michigan Department of Treasury to issue your credit in the form of a State of Michigan Energy Draft, which you can only use the draft to pay heat bills.
Please keep in mind that you qualify for a home heating credit if all of the following apply:
- You own or were contracted to pay rent and occupied a Michigan homestead
- You were NOT a full-time student who was claimed as a dependent on another person’s return
- You did NOT live in college or university operated housing for the entire year
- You did NOT live in a licensed care facility for the entire year
- Your income was within the limits in Table A and Table B (please click on the links to see the income limits)
Note: You may be required to submit documentation to support your claim.
To access the form, please see 2020 MI 1040CR-7. The due date for Form MI-1040CR-7 is September 30, 2021.
