State tax filing
Michigan will give you credit for that on the state return, but you have to attach a copy of the city return. So, even though the Ohio city (Toledo) does not require you to file a return, you have to file one to get the MI credit, even though there will be no tax due or refunded from the Ohio city. The credit cannot be more than the MI tax calculates on the Toledo income.
- In TurboTax Online use the instructions below:
- Once you have completed all other information for the MI state return, select Other credits > Other State Tax Credit
- You can click the "Learn more" button to select "Do Taxes Paid to Localities in Reciprocal States qualify?" for additional information
- Continue through this process and the credit will appear on line 18 of the MI-1040 for 2020
- Once you have completed all other information for the MI state return, select Other credits > Other State Tax Credit
