State tax filing

It depends.

Virginia and Maryland actually have state reciprocity meaning you would only need to file a tax return in your state of residency.  Your employer should have only withheld taxes in Virginia.

However, since they withheld in both Maryland and Virginia, you should file a nonresident Maryland return in order to report the earnings and get a refund for any excess withholdings there.

You will also be able to claim a credit for the taxes paid in Maryland on your Virginia resident return.

You will make your entries in the "My Info"section of TurboTax.

Confirm that you have entered the correct state information:

  1. Click "Edit" to the right of your name
  2. Confirm your input under #2 "Tell us the state(s) you lived in"
  3. Do the same for your spouse if you are married filing jointly.
  4. Go back to the personal information section, and verify the mailing address and "Other state income" section. You would enter Maryland in this section.

Once you enter this information, you should go back into the W-2 input under income.

Select Edit for this W-2 and scroll down to box 15, State & Local Taxes and enter your information as reported on your W-2 form.

You will then continue to the state questions.

Prepare the Nonresident Maryland state tax return first.  Review your input on each interview screen to ensure you are only reporting the wages are listed on your W-2 Form.

Once you have entered all of the Maryland information, then start your Virginia return.  Virginia taxes its residents on all income regardless of the source.

Once you have entered your information in the nonresident return, the information will pull into your resident return for Virginia to ensure you receive any credits for taxes on income which may have been taxed in both states.  You will see this under the credit section as Credit for Taxes Paid to Other States.
