When I followed the Turbo Tax method of setting up to file Separately in Virginia, the tax bill due to Virginia was over $2400. Keep in mind that while filling out the Federal as Joint and then doing Virginia - just before TT told me to stop processing there and instead go to File Separately instructions, my Virginia tax bill was a $500 refund.
So, now TT won't move forward to the next screens to complete my Virginia return while selecting Jointly on the Federal return. Following instructions to file Federal Separately allows TT to proceed to the Virginia return but will cost me $2400 which doesn't seem logical, nor appropriate.
Have I done something wrong? How do I go about completing the Virginia tax filing while Jointly filing?
