State tax filing

Please listen. I bought this program online directly from TT.  I downloaded the Home and Business program and did my taxes on my computer, as I have done with TT for several years. I did not fill out my taxes on line, I never have, and I wouldn't even know how that is done.

I went through the return "five times" on my computer. Not online.

I had been directed to work through my Federal online, so I assumed my already-filed and accepted Federal return has been copied automatically to my online account. When I started to work online, I stopped quickly, thinking, "This is nutty. I just filed my tax return. Why am I starting from square one "on line?" "

I noted above that my Federal had been accepted. I do not have to wait to file the State.

When following your directions regarding multiple accounts, I connected with two-factor authentication, and I was prompted to put in a new password. I did, and I received a confirmation by email. That email says nothing about how many accounts I have, which is irrelevant, as I know I only have one account.

All right, my friends. Here's the issue: I am legally someone else's dependent. When I note that on my Federal, TurboTax does not create a 1040 for State. As soon as I remove that status from Federal, my 1040 appears on State.

That's it. That's the issue. I discovered this on my own. Your assistance is well-intentioned but not applicable. Please share with me my regret for a lost weekend chasing this down.

I intend to start a new thread pertinent to this issue -- why TT omits a state 1040 when a filed Federal is filled out by a dependent. I am faced with either withdrawing that status on an amended Federal just to generate a 1040 state, or working through this TT programing issue with a technician.

If it is a bug, your software writers need to know. If it's not a bug, then the program needs to say, "Hey, dependent, you don't need a state 1040," and it would not say, "Good news, you can still file by mail (without generating a state 1040)." And it would not generate selected Federal schedules and a TT overview referencing a State 1040 (that doesn't exist). It invites an inattentive user to take TT at its word and send in an incomplete return that the State would not accept.

I think it's a bug. And you know, a tax program that directs the user to print out and mail a return without a 1040... even as it references that 1040 in its own cover sheet... that's kind of a big bug.

I do appreciate the speed of your responses. My experience with TT has been quite good apart from this, and I will still use this program. Regards.
