State tax filing
I understand that you are an active duty military family and your home of record is Florida.
- All military related income is only accountable to Florida regardless of anything else.
- The fact that the company you work for is based in Virginia is of no consequence. What does mater is what state you were in when you earned the money.
- Finally, if your remote job was a non-military activity, then that income would be taxable in Maryland as a Non-resident.
I'm not sure how to answer your last question about getting a refund. If you paid taxes to Virginia, that was wrong and you would have to file a tax return to get it back. If you paid taxes to Maryland it would depend on how your return worked out.
You are always welcome to contact us. However, as a member of the military family, you can obtain 100% free access to tax consultants and financial counselors with military expertise.
