I don't think we can answer your question at this time. The 2017 instructions for New York say you can't do that. If you take the standard deduction on your federal tax return, you have to take the standard deduction on your New York return. The New York instructions for 2018 haven't been published yet. I don't know whether they are going to change that rule in view of the federal SALT limitation. I think you are going to have to wait to get the answer to your question until New York publishes some information about the rules for 2018.
