State tax filing
You are most likely being asked for your state and local sales tax rate.
To enter that information:
- Log into your return
- Click on Federal
- Click on Deductions & Credits
- Scroll to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
- Click on Show More if necessary
- Click the button beside Sales Tax
- Click the appropriate button (mine says Continue with Sales Tax)
- Click on Easy Guide
- Check the state you lived in and range of dates you lived there
- The next page asks you to enter your state and local sales tax rate
- If you purchased any major items (for example a car) answer yes and click continue.
- You can enter any major purchase information on the following page.
- At the Places, you Lived screen, unless you have another state to enter, click Done.
- On the following page, you will be asked if you had any nontaxable income
At the end, you will see a screen that compares the Sales Tax Deduction vs State Income Tax Deduction. You could choose to override TurboTax's decision, but TurboTax always chooses the deduction that will give you the greatest tax benefit.
If you are having trouble determining your State & Local Sales Tax rate, look at the following suggestions:
1. You can look at a sales receipt (that you know was purchased in your county)
2. You can google sales tax rate for (your state)
3. Or you can click here to go to your state's Department of Revenue. You can search for the state sales tax rates once you are at your state's website.
