State tax filing

No DC or VA filing requirements for a military spouse who is a resident of WA with nonresident DC sourced wage income only.

If you are covered under MSRRA, you will only file taxes in your state of legal residency (SLR). So if WA is your state of legal residency, then you will not have any state income tax filing requirements in VA, DC or WA.

However, if you do not qualifies under the MSRRA and have DC source income only, then you can still file jointly for federal income tax but will need to file married filing separately for state taxes.

In this situation, you will still not have to file any state income tax return because as a WA resident, you would only have to file a nonresident state income tax return in the state where your income was sourced (DC). (No VA state income tax return would be required.) But DC have no nonresident state income tax filing requirements so no DC state income tax would be due. Therefore you will have no VA, DC or WA state income tax filing requirements.
