State tax filing

It depends.  West Virginia and Virginia are known as reciprocal states, which means that if you live in Virginia, but work in West Virginia, you are only taxed to Virginia and do not pay taxes to West Virginia.  There are times, however, that if the correct form (WV/IT-104 R) is not filled out in West Virginia, then taxes are withheld to West Virginia.  See this FAQ for more information:  https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/4776822.

What is your situation?   Check your W2 from West Virginia to see if they took out tax to West Virginia.  If they did not (only withheld taxes to VA), then make sure in TurboTax that you answer no to the question “Did you work in another state outside of Virginia?” You will not be required to file a state return for West Virginia.

If your West Virginia job did withhold taxes for I West Virginia, click yes on the question “Did you work in another state outside of Virginia?”, and then enter West Virginia.  You will want to fill out the West Virginia return as a non-resident reciprocal state.  You would then get a refund from West Virginia, but would have to pay additional taxes to Virginia.
