State tax filing

Yes - This will be the total CT state income taxes paid/withheld and reported on your 2016 CT state income tax return.

This should also be the same amount that you took as part of your itemized deductions on Schedule A, line 5a.

Please note - if you didn’t deduct state and local income taxes last year, you don’t need to pay taxes on your refund this year. For instance, if you didn’t itemize your deductions in 2016 (you took the standard deduction) then your state refund is tax free this year and does not need to be included on your 2017 tax return. (Just keep a copy of your 1099-G with your tax records.)
