State tax filing

Yes, you always have to file in your home state if required.  However, Maryland and Virginia have an agreement (called reciprocity) that allows you to only file in the state where you lived (resident) instead of both states if you only had income from working in Virginia.  However, if your W2 has VA tax withheld (Box 17) you will want to file with Virginia to get that tax refunded.
