If the home energy credit for solar installation exceed your tax liability for 2017, any excess would be carried forward. This tax credit is considered "non-refundable" which means that, you can't get back more in credits than you paid to the government in taxes throughout the year. If you are can't use all of the 30% credit of your purchase for solar products in one year, you can carry forward the unclaimed portion to future years.
