If you're still in the federal portion of your tax return entry, you would not see this "move the needle" on your state taxes. When you get to State > New York > Deductions and Credits, you will be prompted to enter your contributions to qualified 529 higher education savings plans, at which point your state return will be re-calculated with the deduction for 529 plan contributions.
