State tax filing

For that many states (over 5) you will want to use any of the TurboTax desktop lineup of products:  Basic, Deluxe, Premier, and Home & Business.  With any of these desktop TurboTax versions (installed on your own computer by CD-ROM disc or a downloaded software purchase from the internet), you can install and use as many of the individual TurboTax state modules as you like.

This will easily allow you to prepare (6) different state tax returns.  In point of fact, the TurboTax employee answering this very question has all (46) state packages installed.  The desktop software will allow you to you prepare and paper-file as many states as you want.

However, you can only e-file returns in up to three different states for each federal return you prepare; the rest will need to be printed and paper-filed.

The TurboTax online (web-based) suite of programs can only handle a maximum of (5) different states for any given federal return.  So, with as many states as you have in which to file, some version of the desktop TurboTax software will be your best choice.

Here's one final (vital) tip:  When preparing returns in multiple states, be sure to do your nonresident and / or part-year resident states returns first, and your resident state last.  That way the tax credits for mutually-taxed or double-taxed income will flow properly onto the correct state tax return.

Thank you for asking this question.
