State tax filing

In your first post, you had mentioned that you left off your wife's W-2 from your return.  If you didn't enter the W-2 in TurboTax at all, this would require you to amend your Federal return.  If you meant that you didn't include her W-2 income (that you already entered in TurboTax) on your California return, then you won't need to amend your Federal return.

The point about amending Federal only applies if you made any changes to your W-2 regrading California taxes withheld and you itemized deductions on your Federal return.  If you didn't add any W-2 information to your amended return, then you won't need to be concerned about amending your Federal return regardless of taking the standard or itemized deduction.

You should still fill in the explanation for the Federal 1040-X.  You can simply state on there that you were only amending your state return to reallocate the income to that state.  This will clear the error and it won't require you to file the Federal amended return.  Many times the explanation of the amendment on the Federal return is just carried over to the state return.  This will not affect your original filed Federal return at all.

You should have had an option to only e-file the state amended return when you get to the File tab in TurboTax.

If your payment to California Franchise Tax Board has been taken out of your account, you should be OK to file your amended return now.
