State tax filing
This is the confusing part:
"If you change the amount of tax you paid to California in 2025 (such as withholding), then you should amend both returns if it will affect a deduction on the Federal return for taxes paid to CA."
I'm only making changes to CA state return because I was a partial resident in 2025 and I over reported my income to the state by about $1536.
As far as I understand that should not affect Federal return because I must pay Federal tax regardless of where I live. For that reason, I'm not making changes to my Federal tax. It's correct and doesn't need to be amended.
The following is what I clicked to amend State return:
Turbotax still presents 1040-X form and asks me to fill out "Explanation of changes". The following is what Turbotax asked me to fill out (1040-X form automaticaly added to my Amended State return):
I left it blank and skip Run Smart Check to check for errors. The next thing Turbotax tells me is this:
I did make changes to my State return and CA Refund is showing $38. Federal is showing 0. Turbotax insists that I should file my amended return for both state and federal. This makes me think Turbotax is unable to handle Amended State return only or I don't know how to use the software. Worse case scenario I'll just leave it as is. I don't want to mess up my 2025 Federal return just to get my $38 overpayment back from CA.
The other option is to ignore the error on 1040-X form and continue to e-file my Amended State Return only. Ignore the Federal Return (do not e-file or mail it, ever). Is that the correct way to do it?
