State tax filing

You do not need an ID to file taxes online electronically although it does ask at the end if you would like to enter in your ID information to better protect your identity but needing your ID to file taxes electronically is not needed.

You can leave the driver's license/state ID information blank, and still file your federal and state tax returns. Just be sure that the fields for this information are empty.

Your driver's license number is actually not required to file your federal taxes, nor is it required to file your State tax return in most states. Only two states, Illinois and Alabama, require a driver's license to file a state return.

For additional information, you can view the IRS information on New Security Safeguards
