State tax filing

If you are OH residents, but one of our worked in VA you file two state tax returns.

First, you file a VA Non-resident Tax Return.  You report only the income earned in VA on that return.  The VA return will generate a Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State that will pass to your OH return.

Next, you file an OH Resident Tax Return.  On this return, you report your "worldwide" income.  You will receive a Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State from the VA return so that you are not taxed twice on the same income.

If your spouse is going to continue working in VA you should see if the employer can do VA withholding.  Otherwise, you should make estimated tax payments so you don't have a large VA tax bill again next year.
