State tax filing
New Jersey does not offer a deduction for 529 plan contributions. But if you live in New York and pay New York state income taxes you may be able to deduct the contributions on your New York tax return. (For more information, please see NY 529 Plans.)
You'll enter the 529 contributions during the New York state tax interview, under Changes to Federal Income. To get there:
- Continue your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
- Click State (left side of your screen).
- On the Let's get your state taxes done right screen, click Continue.
- Under Status of your state returns, click Start (or Edit or Continue) next to New York. (If you haven't entered the New York return yet, you may have to add it first.)
- Continue through the New York tax interview. When you get to Changes to Federal Income, scroll down under Education adjustments and click Start next to New York 529 college savings account activity. (Click the first screenshot below for reference.)
- Follow the onscreen instructions to Enter New York 529 Contributions. (Click the second screenshot below.)
