State tax filing
You lived in Wisconsin from January through March. Then you lived in Virginia from April through December.
If you are completing part-year resident state income tax returns for Wisconsin and Virginia, Virginia has a claim on the income that you earned within the state of Virginia. Wisconsin has no claim on the income earned in Virginia unless it was earned from Wisconsin sources while you were a nonresident of Wisconsin.
The TaxBook, page WI-14, states:
Wisconsin has a claim on income either earned while a resident for part-year residents or earned from Wisconsin sources while a nonresident.
