State tax filing

You establish your eligibility for the subtraction by answering certain questions in the Maine portion of the TurboTax interview.  To review your responses in TurboTax Online: 

  1. Select Tax Home in the left pane
  2. On the  Hi, let's keep working on your taxes! screen, select the dropdown on the right side of the State Taxes box, then select StartContinue, Pick up where you left off, or Review/Edit
  3. If the  You've already got a head start on state taxes screen appears, select Let's get started.  Otherwise, in the left pane, select Prepare State
  4. Proceed through the screens until you come to the Status of your state returns screen
  5. Select  StartContinue or Edit to the right of Maine.  If no state is shown, select + Add another state
  6. Proceed through the state screens until you get to the You've Finished Your Maine Return screen.  Select Go over Maine again
  7. Page through the screens until you get to the Retirement Income and Contributions page.  Make sure you check Yes next to Did you receive retirement or pension income in 2023, or receive it in a prior year and chose to spread it over 3 years?  Answer the other questions appropriately, then select Continue
  8. On the  Pension Income Deduction screen, make sure you enter the amount of your eligible pension that's included in your federal adjusted gross income.  See the image below.  Then, select Continue

In your Maine tax summary, you'll see the subtraction to the right of Income modifications.  To view your summary in TurboTax Online:

  1. Select Tax Home in the left pane
  2. On the Hi, let's keep working on your taxes! screen, select the dropdown on the right side of the State Taxes box, then select StartContinue, or Review/Edit
  3. In the left pane, scroll down and select the dropdown to the right of Tax Tools
  4. Select Tools
  5. On the  Tools Center popup, select the View Tax Summary link
  6. Now, in the left pane, select ME Tax Summary.
