State tax filing
It depends. If you did not get paid for any work you did in NJ during 2016, you will not need to make any adjustments, because you will not need to file a state return. Only income earned in NJ and paid to you in 2016 will be taxable, and it seems like you would likely not have any (or very, very little).
You will file a NJ resident return on your 2017 tax return (filed next year).
