State tax filing
In general, if you are away from your parent's home going to school and their address is considered your permanent address, where you have your driver's license, then it is still considered your Resident state and the time you are at school is counted as time you lived at your permanent address.
If this is the case, then you were a Resident of California the whole time.
If you worked a job in Ohio while you were in school, you may need to file a Non-Resident return for the refund of your withholding.
If you do need to file 2 state returns, I suggest you begin with fresh data imported from the federal return.
- First, please check My Info in the Federal return and be sure the box is checked for Made money in another state
- Then go to the States section and click on the delete trashcan icon for both New Jersey and Connecticut
- Then, add Ohio first, and be sure it is a Non-Resident state and complete it
- It will show your federal income and ask you to allocate what is sourced in Ohio
- Next, add California and be sure it is a Resident State
- It will show your federal income and ask you to allocate what is sourced in California
This should prompt the allocation of income in both Ohio and California. Both returns will ask what part of the federal income is sourced in that state, so you can divide the income.
If this does not completely solve the problem, please let us know more details, so we may better assist you.
