State tax filing
Did you start with the nonresident state first and go through each return until you received the prompt done with state?
The prompt for non-resident return must be filed first will remain on the screen even if the return is complete. You will start with the non-resident return first because most states will allow a credit for taxes paid to another state. TurboTax will walk you through the process of claiming the credit on your resident return. Once you have completed both state returns, follow these steps to continue on with filing your return:
- Click state review from the left side panel. This will give you a review of both returns and indicate if any errors occurred.
- Review and correct any errors indicated during the state review. Once all errors are cleared you will receive a message that states I want to file federal and state together or to delete the state returns.
- Click I want to file federal and state together and click continue
- Click Done with States at the bottom right-hand corner
- Click Continue again to do a File error check on all returns
