In fact in doing my additional due diligence, I discovered that New York does not conform to the IRC through the specific adoption of the Internal Revenue Code provisions in accordance with NYS Tax Code ¶10-515, Federal Conformity. Generally speaking, NYS/NYC follows the federal treatment of items of income and deductions but not residency requirements for international students.
Sprint tax has the correct information thus you should follow their advice since they are responsible for filing your return.
