State tax filing
Tennessee does not have an individual state return, so she will not need to file there for her Form W-2 wages.
Because she is a Part-Year Resident and you will want to allocate your income between Alabama sourced income and other income, if you wish to file jointly for Alabama, do it as a Part-Year Resident on Form 40.
- First, please check My Info in the Federal return and be sure the box is checked for Made money in another state
- Then go to the States section and click on the delete icon for Alabama, so we can pull in fresh data from the federal return
- Then Add a State for Alabama again and be sure to answer that you will be Part-Year Residents
- On the income allocation screen, it will use federal income as a base and ask you to note if it is Alabama sourced
- Select your income as Alabama based and her Form W-2 income as not.
