State tax filing

Since the Maryland tax return starts with the Federal Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), it is asking about any adjustments or losses that are being reported on your Federal return that do not pertain to Maryland.

Federal adjustments are reported on Form 1040 Schedule 1 Part II and would include a Health Savings Account (HSA) deduction reported on line 13.  If you made contributions to your HSA outside of payroll deductions before you were a Maryland resident, then the deduction is reported on your Federal return and would need to be entered as a non-Maryland adjustment.

Amounts contributed to your 401k and HSA through payroll deductions from your California job would not be entered as a non-Maryland adjustment.
