The error occurs due to the entry in the IT-112-R (NJ) with the total withholding listed as the tax amount instead of just the NJ tax amount. The total tax imposed by another state should be listed as the tax imposed, not the total withholding. To fix this in TurboTax Desktop, follow these steps:
- Click Forms in the right-hand corner
- Scroll down to IT-112-R (NJ)
- Scroll Down to 24b and enter the total tax imposed from your NJ return (should match line A of other State Tax Computation)
- Verify Line 24 has been updated to the correct figure
