State tax filing

Provided you worked for the same employer for the year, what you propose to do based on time allocations is reasonable to use.  You may not be able to view the actual adjustment of $696 unless you are using TurboTax Desktop but you may be able to see the result in TurboTax Online by following these steps:

  1. On the left side of your screen click where is says "Tax Tools"
  2. Click on "Tools"
  3. Click on "View Tax Summary"
  4. Click on "Preview my 1040" and scroll down to lines 8-11.  Is there an item for $696 there?  If so you will have found what it is, if not you must go back in to the program to see if you can locate this item.

Again on the left side click on "Back", this will take you back to the entry screens.  Click on your state returns and New York should show.  At the main NY screen click on "Changes to Federal income", and then scroll the page to see if there are any adjustments that are highlighted.  If so click on it and that should show you what the item is.  If not, it may be an item on your W-2, usually a Box 14 item for NY, or any other item that shows an amount, or combination of amounts totaling $696.

Unfortunately if that is the case you would have to go line by line to find the actual item.  The actual dollar allocation can be done, as you thought, but allocating based on time in each locale.  If you cannot find the item name in question, perhaps a simple name like Miscellaneous will do to get you past the screen.  It should show as correct on the actual form.

Used to hang out in New Rochelle myself many years ago.  On North Street back then, which I am told is completely different than what I remember.
