State tax filing

When given an option, you should always choose the option that results in the lowest tax.   There are situations in which a part-year SC resident would be better off by choosing to file as a full-year resident (if they only had SC income during the year and wanted tax breaks only residents get).   But in your situation, having other state income, it is more beneficial to be a non-resident of SC.    ''Suspect'' could describe anything that draws unnecessary attention to your tax return (like overpaying taxes).
