State tax filing
An overpayment means you overpaid your state income taxes and you'll be receiving a refund.
- If you indicated in 2021 TurboTax to apply your overpayment to next year's taxes, you don't have to do anything. TurboTax will automatically carryforward the amount.
To enter the amount or see the amount being applied:
- Open TurboTax.
- On the left side menu, select Federal.
- Scroll down to Deductions & Credits.
- On the Your tax breaks screen, scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid, then Income Taxes Paid.
- On the Income Taxes Paid screen, scroll down to 2021 Refund Applied to 2022, then 2021 refund applied to 2022 state taxes.
- On the How much of your 2021 state refund did you apply to your 2022 state taxes? screen, enter/verify the state and enter/verify the amount.
- Continue with the onscreen interview until complete.
