State tax filing

If you were a nonresident or part-year resident and you lived in a state that has a reciprocal agreement with Kentucky you must file form 740-NP-R.  The states with reciprocal agreements are Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

If you lived in one of these reciprocal states for a part of the year, be sure the correct states of residence/employment are indicated in Federal "My Info". Then go back to the Kentucky interview and in the residency area select the  "Nonresident form 740NP- R" vice Nonresident 740NP form. If you or your spouse were a nonresident or part-year resident of KY but not in a reciprocal state, you would file form 740-NP.  Be sure to verify in the Kentucky interview that the "Nonresident Form 740NP" is selected.

If you are a resident of KY you should file form 740. Go back to Federal "My Info" and check your residence information to show you and your spouse lived and worked only in KY.  Be sure to also check the Kentucky interview to select the "Resident" form.

Once you've determined that you need to file a nonresident state return, the first thing you want to do is make sure you've filled out the Personal Info section correctly:

  1. With your return open, select My Info in the left-hand menu.
  2. Then, on the Personal info summary screen, scroll down to Other State Income, and select Edit.
  3. At the,  Did you make money in any other states? the question, answer Yes and make sure your nonresident state(s) are selected from the drop-down.
  4. Select Continue to return to your Personal info summary.
