State tax filing
Illinois allows you use an 8-digit IL-PIN if you do not have a driver’s license, but filed an Illinois return in the past.
In File, TurboTax will ask: “Did you file an Illinois income tax return for 2020 or 2021?
- Select Yes, I filed one of both of these returns, then Continue
- On the screen Sign Your Illinois Return, enter your Illinois 2021 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and 8-digit Illinois PIN.
You may obtain the IL-PIN assigned to you by
- using IL-PIN inquiry in MyTax Illinois, or
- calling the toll-free number at 1 800-732-8866 and selecting "individual income tax" and "PIN" and following the prompts.
Be sure to have your Illinois driver's license/state ID number or prior year adjusted gross income available before you make your inquiry.
If you do not have an 8-digit IL-PIN (you are a first-time filer in Illinois), you may not file your return electronically through MyTax Illinois. However, if you have a valid driver's license, or state ID card issued by the Illinois Secretary of State, you may be able to use a tax preparer or tax software to file your return electronically. Otherwise, you must file a paper Form IL-1040.
