State tax filing

Did you not file a New Jersey extension in April? If you filed a New Jersey extension you do not have to send a copy of the federal extension with your New Jersey tax return. It doesn't matter whether you filed a federal extension.

If you did not file a New Jersey extension, you only have to send a copy of your federal extension if you file your New Jersey tax return on paper, i.e. by mail. If you are filing your New Jersey tax return by mail, just include a copy of the federal extension. If you are e-filing your New Jersey tax return you do not have to send a copy of your federal extension. You only have to check a box on the New Jersey return indicating that you filed a federal extension. TurboTax will check that box if the federal extension is included in the federal section of TurboTax.

BUT - do you owe any tax to New Jersey? If you don't owe any tax, it doesn't matter whether you filed a federal extension or whether the box is checked on the New Jersey tax return. There is no penalty for filing late if you do not owe tax.
