State tax filing
Correct, sch Y would not apply. Follow these steps:
- Open your return
- Go to MA state return
- continue to We've finished your return
- Select Adjustments
- continue through
- Select no to benefits from firefighter/ emergency medical
- continue going through to How Mass handles Income for Part-year
- continue
- enter the Non- Mass portion of income- zero or blank should be entered
- continue
- income earned while not a resident- all of it.
- Continue on until you reach Income Exclusions for Mass.
- Mark "Neither of the Above" since that is the firefighter/ foreign treaty question.
- continue through your return
For the non-military wages, review your federal section to see if anything related to this income was answered that could pull to the MA sch Y.
If you are still stumped, you can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:
If you are online, go to tax tools>tools > share file with agent > 6 digit number pops up.
If on desktop, go to online >send tax file to agent > number pops.
