State tax filing

If you did not physically work in Virginia and lived and worked in your resident state, regardless of where your employer is/was situated, then you are not required to file a Virginia return. In this case you can cancel and/or ignore the Virginia return.

If you did physically work in Virginia then a tax return is required as a nonresident.  You would include only the money that was earned while you were there working. Review the information below to correct your Virginia return if this applies to you.

Resident State:  All income worldwide is required to be reported on your resident state return.  Any money that is also taxed in a nonresident state is eligible for the "credit for taxes paid to another state" when you complete your resident state return.  Your resident state does not want you to pay tax twice on the same income.

Nonresident State: Any money earned in a nonresident state is required to be reported on that state tax return (with the exception of reciprocal agreements which may not apply).  The nonresident state will tax any income earned from that state.
