Amend to correct erroneous CA tax withholding on 401k 2020 withdrawal
After a phone call with CA Franchise Tax Board about the status of our 2020 refund, I learned that I erroneously entered the amount of CA tax withheld from a a 401k withdrawal made during 2020. The CA FTB representative identified the error (I entered $9,000 instead of $900). Looking at my 2020 CA return and the1009-R, I confirmed the error with the CA FTB representative. The CA FTB representative told me the amount of tax that would be owed $2,402, (instead of a $6,522 refund). I concurred that the stated amount looked appropriate and asked if I should amend the 2020 CA return. She said that I should. I then opened TurboTax to prepare an amended return. I changed the CA tax withholding amount from $9,000 to $900 and the tax owed amount to jumped from a $6,522 refund to a tax owed amount of $8,001 (instead of $2,402 per the CA FTB). Other than adding the explanation for amending the return. no other changes were needed or made. That $8,001 amount is clearly incorrect, but I cannot figure out why, or how to correct it. Help! Scott
