State tax filing

I got the same thing. Telling me that I made a mistake on my 2018 taxes and that I owed $900 plus interest! How can they charge me interest if they’re just telling me now that there was a problem? And why would they wait this long to tell me there was a problem.  Oh yeah, probably because I won’t be able to go back and try to amend it since it’s now over three years ago. Had they told me before April 15 then I could have. Very low down and dirty

BTW, a 2018 return was only 2 tax years ago--not 3--so I'm not sure what you are referring to above when you said "now over three years ago."   You can still amend a 2018 return, if it ultimately becomes necessary.  But you should address the tax letter you received first, since it likely has a deadline and a demand for action, and penalties and interest will keep accruing.  If you need to contest it, the letter likely explains the procedure to do so.   My next paragraph tells you how to discuss and get help with the letter.

I'm a fellow user--not a tax person--and can't help you with a CA return, but here's how you can discuss it with the TurboTax Free Audit Support Center.   At the page below, click on the blue "Get Help" button and follow the prompts to get a phone number.   The page says "IRS letters", but they help with state situations as well.

Or if you purchased the add-on "Audit Defense" product, we can tell you how to contact the folks that handle that product.
