After you file
Yes Deluxe would allow you to file for an education credit on a tax return. However, you may not be eligible for one. The American Opportunity Credit is in two parts. 60% of it is non refundable meaning you must have a tax liability for it to offset in order to get it. If you had no taxable income, you would not have a tax liability.
The other 40% of the credit is refundable meaning you can get it even if you have no tax liability. However, for a student under age 24, you must generally have provided more than half your own support from income earned from working in order to qualify for the refundable credit. You said you had no earnings so you wouldn't qualify for this portion of the credit if under age 24.
