When I completed my tax returns in early February, I could not claim mortgage insurance. Can I claim mortgage insurance now? If so, do I need to amend my returns?

When I completed my 2017 tax returns in early February, I could not claim mortgage insurance. As of March 2018 can I now claim mortgage insurance? If so, do I need to amend my 2017 tax returns?
