After you file
Taxes must be submitted or postmarked before midnight on April 15, 2019. See the deadline dates below:
April 15, 2019
- Deadline for filing a 2018 personal or calendar year estates/trusts tax returns or extension.
- Because of the Patriots’ Day holiday on April 15 in Maine and Massachusetts and the Emancipation Day holiday on April 16 in the District of Columbia, taxpayers who live in Maine or Massachusetts have until April 17, 2019 to file their returns.
- The return or extension must be postmarked or transmitted for e-filing by Monday, April 15, 2019
- If you owe taxes:To avoid late payment penalties and interest, any additional taxes you owe must be paid by this date even if you filed an extension.
- If you’re expecting a refund:If you missed the April 15 filing deadline, you have until April 14, 2022 to file and still receive your refund. After that date, any refund would be forfeited to the Department of the Treasury.
- Due date for first installment of 2019 estimated tax payments.
- Deadline for filing a 2018 Corporation return or extension.
April 20, 2019
- Deadline for resubmitting or paper-filing a rejected federal return that was originally e-filed by the April 15 deadline if you did not file an extension.
- April 22, 2019, if you live in Maine or Massachusetts because of Patriot's Day.
- Note: Although the last day to resubmit a rejected return is October 20, the April 20 deadline applies to taxpayers who owe taxes and want to avoid the late-filing penalty.
