Yes unfortunately that COULD be the case.  That is called a refund offset.  I would recommend you call Bureau of the Fiscal Service at (1) 800-304-3107 or TDD 866-297-0517 to find out if your refund may or has been offset. Follow the prompts.   It will ask for the Social Security number for which the debt is attached- in your case this would be yours.  I am going to include a link which has additional information about refund offsets.

The IRS lists the following obligations which can be collected from tax refunds:

  1. federal tax
  2. state income tax,
  3. state unemployment compensation debts,
  4. child or spousal support,
  5. a federal nontax debt, such as a student loan
