Many taxpayers are receiving letters questioning educational credits when the school reported tuition "billed" in box 2 on the 1098-T form rather than tuition "paid" in box 1 so the IRS is denying credits based of the billed amount until you supply proof, such as receipts from the school, cancelled checks, bank statements, etc, that satisfies the IRS that you actually paid the amount in box 2 for qualified educational expenses.
