After you file

Some states are quick with refunds, while others take a long time--even weeks--as they crack down on fraudulent returns.

This is what is displayed currently at the West Virginia state "refund status" website:

"The West Virginia State Tax Department is responding to an increased risk of fraudulent filings, and is implementing enhanced security measures for your protection. As a result, expect significant delay of your tax refund. You should only call concerning your refund if it has been more than 10 weeks since filing your return. In the interim, please use this tool to check the status of your refund."

While it may not take that long, if you haven't received it by 10 weeks from filing, you can phone them to inquire about it.  In the meantime you should make sure you actually successfully filed.

If you efiled the state return, doublecheck with this tool below to be sure the state return was successfully efiled and accepted:

If that confirms it was accepted, or if you mailed the state return, then here's how to check the status of a state refund.

NOTE:   At the WV StateTax Dept. website,  you do NOT have to create an account.  Look for the link "Where's My Refund" on the right side of the screen.
