After you file
This error is happening because when you switch from "Separate" to "Jointly," the IRS system treats your spouse as a "new" signer on the account. To verify their identity for e-filing, the IRS requires their 2024 (prior year) AGI or PIN—even if TurboTax didn't prompt you for it during the initial amendment walk-through.
To fix this and get past the rejection, follow these steps:
- Go to the File tab in the left-hand menu.
- Proceed through the screens until you reach the "Signature" or "Verify your Identity" page.
- Look for the section for your Spouse.
- If the AGI field is blank, enter their 2024 Adjusted Gross Income. Note: Since you originally filed "Married Filing Separately" for 2024, use the AGI from Line 11 of your spouse's 2024 Form 1040.
